Imagine Dragon slow things down with new single, “Next To Me.” Produced by Alex Da Kid, the love song (their first) is expected to appear on a reissue of the band’s platinum-selling Evolve album. “I always let you down, you’re shattered on the ground,” Dan Reynolds sings over strummed guitars and a sea of backing vocalists on the chorus. “But still I find you there next to me.” The rocker admits that this is an unexpected change of pace in an interview with Zane Lowe.
“Yeah I don’t typically write love songs,” he says. “I started writing when I was about 13 years old and it was a source of an escape from school from depression from feeling lost and it was never a romance. So for me this is some of the first times that I’ve really explored diving into my mind and musicality and sonicality of romance.” As for the song’s sleepy tempo? “I think we’re always trying to push the boundaries of what pop and rock can be and it’s very urban,” Dan explains. “It’s almost like our urban pop rock song in a strange waltz timing then it drops into four four on the bridge.”
“I feel it’s something everybody can relate to, which is feeling like you are going to fail sometimes in a relationship and the true value of a relationship is what happens then. Does the person give you another chance? Do they see past your flaws? Are they with you at your worst?” Listen to “Next To Me,” which is destined to follow “Believer” and “Thunder” into the upper reaches of the top of the Billboard Hot 100 below.
