MTV is unleashing its first promo for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards today (July 20) on Billboard with a celestial video that pays homage to the award show’s coveted Moonman trophies.
In a nod to the astronaut figure and the pioneering spirit it represents, the otherworldly teaser centers on a set of musicians and dancers as they plant an MTV flag on the moon. Don’t blink, or you might miss iconic moments from previous VMA shows as they float in outer space, like the wedding dress Madonnawore in her 1984 performance of «Like a Virgin» and the snake Britney Spearswielded while singing «I’m A Slave 4 U» onstage in 2001.
All this is sound-tracked by a futuristic cover of «Video Killed The Radio Star,» the Buggles’ recording that became MTV’s first-aired music video in 1981. The stellar (no pun intended) visual is directed by Floria Sigismondi, who has worked on music videos for the likes of Rihanna and David Bowie.
The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from The Forum in Inglewood, CA, on Sunday, Aug. 27.
