Surprise!

Taylor Swift was so bummed that all her big summer plans didn’t pan out that she went into the studio to work out her emotions. And, as it turns out, she recorded a whole new album, Folklore, which will drop at midnight tonight (July 23).

«Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen,» she wrote on Instagram, announcing the surprise release with a series of images of a fog-enshrouded forest. «And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into. I wrote and recorded this music in isolation but got to collaborate with some musical heroes of mine.»

Among the people Taylor worked with are producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Aaron Dessner of The National, who co-wrote or produced 11 of the 16 songs on the album, as well as Bon Iver, who co-wrote and sings on one of the tracks, William Bowery, who co-wrote two songs and, of course, Swift’s frequent collaborator producer/songwriter/singer Jack Antonoff, who she said «is basically musical family at this point.»

«Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed,» Swift said. «My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with. Love you guys so much.»

Folklore is the follow-up to last year’s Lover; at press time no additional information was available on the track list.

Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise 🤗Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into. I wrote and recorded this music in isolation but got to collaborate with some musical heroes of mine; @aarondessner (who has co-written or produced 11 of the 16 songs), @boniver (who co-wrote and was kind enough to sing on one with me), William Bowery (who co-wrote two with me) and @jackantonoff (who is basically musical family at this point). Engineered by Laura Sisk and Jon Low, mixed by Serban Ghenea & Jon Low. The album photos were shot by the amazing @bethgarrabrant. Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed. My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with. Love you guys so much ♥️

Katy Perry performs onstage with Zedd at Coachella Stage during the 2019 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival on April 14, 2019 in Indio, Calif.

Katy Perry decided to clown around a bit with the cover reveal of her fifth album on Wednesday (July 8). The singer challenged fans to help her «find my smile» by playing a game in which they had to tweet to pop virtual balloons in order to uncover the title of the record due out on Aug. 14. Industrious and thirsty for the image, KatyCats quickly revealed the instantly iconic picture of KP as a glum clown with a red nose and a blue and white checkered suit above the title, Smile.

So far, Perry has released a handful of songs that could appear on the album, including «Never Worn White,» «Daisies» and has mentioned the tracks «Teary Eyes» and «What Makes a Woman» in interviews.

The Weeknd won a very close race for Number One on the latest Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart. His After Hours album earned 146,500 album equivalent units, just enough to squeeze by 5 Seconds of Summer’s Calm, which arrived at Number Two with 144,300 units.

After Hours enjoyed robust sales in its second week on the chart — 48,500 copies — as well as 113.9 million streams. 5 Seconds of Summer out-sold the Weeknd, moving nearly 70,000 copies of Calm. But the Weeknd enjoyed a massive edge in streaming (113.9 million to 21.5 million) and song sales (42,700 to 7,000), and that was enough to keep him at Number One.

The Rolling Stone 200 Albums chart tracks the most popular releases of the week in the United States. Entries are ranked by album units, a number that combines digital and physical album sales, digital song sales, and audio streams using a custom weighting system. The chart does not include passive listening such as terrestrial radio or digital radio. The Rolling Stone 200 Albums chart is updated daily, and each week Rolling Stone finalizes and publishes an official version of the chart, covering the seven-day period ending with the previous Thursday.

Aside from the competition at the top of the chart last week, three other albums debuted in the Top Ten. The leader was Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, which arrived at Number Four with 46.6 million streams. Pearl Jam debuted at Number Seven with Gigaton; as is often the case with veteran rockers, the majority of the band’s consumption was driven by album sales. The R&B singer PartyNextDoor trailed behind with Partymobile, which arrived at Number Nine thanks mostly to 43.9 million streams.

Calvin Harris posted this video, revealing that his new album, titled Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, will include collabs with: Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Kehlani, Future, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Big Sean, John Legend, Khalid, Migos, Schooboy Q, Ariana Grande, Yung Thug, D.R.A.M., Nicki Minaj, Lil Yachty, Jessie Reyez, Partynextdoor, and Snoop Dogg.

Yes, we said Katy Perry — the nemesis of Calvin’s ex, Taylor Swift who wrote “Bad Blood” aboutKaty. You may remember in July 2016 after Calvin and Taylor’s break up, he went on a Twitter rant slamming his ex, and seemingly taking Katy’s side in their long-winded feud.

“I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it,” Calvin tweeted at the time. Well it looks like he’s officially taken Katy’s side. As we told you following their Twitter fall out, Katy was thinking about working on some sort of response to Taylor, and was so happy to have Calvin’s support.

Set to be released on June 30, the video clip with a sunset background features vocals from DJ Khalid and Future.
