Jessie J Unleashes Sparse & Soulful New Track “Not My Ex”

0

Jessie J has been threatening to release new music for the better part of a year now. Last month, she came good on that ominous promise by announcing the title of her fourth LP, R.O.S.E., and sharing the lead single, “Think About That.” The sprawling effort saw the UK diva doing the absolute most in an attempt to kick start the era, but the effort did not resonate as well as expected. Today (October 6), she may be able to redeem herself with the unveiling of her sparse new buzz track, “Not My Ex.”

“My ex used to tell me I’m flawless when laying low with all the girls,” the 29-year-old forlornly announces over a soulful production courtesy of DJ Camper. Although she has been burned in the past, she is preparing to try again with a new flame. “Now you wanna love me, who knows what you’ll find. It won’t be easy, but I’m down for the ride,” she earnestly croons before falling further in love on the chorus. It is a mature effort that manages to consider the pain of a broken heart without becoming cynical or giving up.

“Not My Ex” is a much stronger offering from the “Bang Bang” siren, and it manages to avoid many pitfalls that tend to plague her projects. The lyrics are earnest without feeling preachy, and the big-voiced siren manages to emote nicely without bellowing so loudly that you’re deafened after listening. The track also displays the honesty and maturity that she’d promised in an interview with Billboard earlier this year. “I’m speaking on issues that a 29-year-old goes through which is different from what I’ve sung about in the past,” she promised.

Sonically, Jessie is comparing R.O.S.E. to 2011’s Who You Are, which featured some of her defining hits like “Do It Like A Dude,” “Domino” and “Price Tag.” Hopefully she’s able to recapture some of that magic moving forward. As it stands, “Not My Ex” is a solid effort and a step in the right direction. Give the track a spin below.

Jessie J Announces New Project ‘R.O.S.E.’ In Long & Emotional Video

0

Jessie J revealed that she’s releasing a new project called R.O.S.E. (it stands for Realizations, Obsessions, Sex and Empowerment) in a sprawling video. Seriously, this thing feels longer Interstellar. “I tried to stop and I didn’t know how to because it’s impossible to walk away from true love. Art, emotion, lyrics, music, feeling is what I need to survive,” the Brit says of her self-imposed exile from the music industry while walking serenely through a wheat field. “I don’t do this because I want to do it, I do it because I have to.”

“I lost my passion to create, to draw a line between business and art,” she continues, referring to 2014’s underwhelming and impersonal Sweet Talker. “I’d fallen into darkness and allowed myself to be led by fear. The fear was keeping other people happy who didn’t ever care about me and I was running deeper into something and someone I wasn’t.” Jessie clearly read every self-help book in the library because she came to some very zen conclusions. “The music I said I didn’t want to make is what brought me back to life,” she muses.

“The anger, the honest, the heartache, the pain, the joy, the strength, the love, it all happened for a reason.” Towards the end of the visual, which includes more posing than a season of America’s Next Top Model, she finally mentions R.O.S.E.. “For each letter there is a word and for each word there’s a song I will share with you,” the “Bang Bang” diva elaborates. “I’m strong enough now to let you in, to be real and to be free. A rose is at it’s most beautiful when it’s budding new. I rose above the pain.” Ok, hun. That’s enough.

From the video, it sounds like R.O.S.E. might be a four-track EP, however, she refers to it as an album on her Instagram. Jessie previously revealed that her new music was exclusively produced by DJ Camper and was a return to the sound of her debut album. “From the ages 25-30, you learn so much and grow as a person. You become who you’re going to be for a long time. I’ve also enjoyed the process of just getting back to songwriting on my own,” she told Billboard. “It’s a piece of music as opposed to singles and album fillers.”

New Single Soon? Jessie J Is Filming A Music Video

Well, that didn’t take long! A couple of days ago, Jessie Jfired up Instagram to express her frustration with “the business side of the industry” — dedicating Lauryn Hill’s“Ex Factor” to execs. The Brit’s message must have been received loud and clear because she is currently filming a music video for what I assume is the lead single from her 4th LP. The “Bang Bang” hitmaker shared a still sitting on a car with the caption “you ready” and a video walking along a beach. Fingers crossed for a summery bop.

The big-lunged diva opened up about the project in a recent interview with Billboard. “With this next lot of music, I’m very much going back to my roots like on my first album, which was very honest,” Jessie revealed. “From the ages 25-30, you learn so much and grow as a person. You become who you’re going to be for a long time. I’ve also enjoyed the process of just getting back to songwriting on my own.” She also announced the album’s only producer. “I’m working with one producer, DJ Camper, on this cohesive piece of work. It’s a piece of music as opposed to singles and album fillers.”
