James Bay Announces ‘Electric Light’ LP, Drops Buzz Track “Pink Lemonade”

James Bay reinvented himself on “Wild Love,” eschewing the stripped-back approach of his debut album in favor of a soulful, synth-driven sound. It looks like that was just the tip of the iceberg. The Brit announced his sophomore LP, Electric Light, today (March 7) and it represents a whole new chapter. “If I had to describe my first album visually it would probably be a flame – while this new album is about a real sonic and artistic evolution for me,” he explains. “The feeling of a 100 watt bulb expanding and brightening is what I envisioned. Electric Light came to my mind and I knew it was perfect.”

The 27-year-old also shared a buzz track called “Pink Lemonade.” With its driving guitars and rock swagger, the catchy song is something of bridge between the old and new. (It’s certainly more recognizable as a James Bay track than “Wild Love”). It’s always risky to fiddle with a winning formula, but fans seem more than willing to go along for the adventure. The album’s lead single has already racked up 10 million streams, while his North American tour is largely sold out. See the tracklist of Electric Light (due May 18) and listen to his latest tune below.

James Bay’s “Wild Love” Video Stars “Stranger Things” Actress Natalia Dyer

The most exciting musical reinvention of 2018 is James Bay 2.0. The Brit, who broke big with bluesy rock anthems like “Let It Go” and “Hold Back The River,” switches his acoustic guitar for sexy synths on “Wild Love” — an ’80s-inspired soul song with shades of early Prince. “I know some of this new sound was not apparent on my first album… but I think my new music helps to paint a fuller picture of who I am,” the 27-year-old explained. “As soon as I recognized I was being pinned down as ‘the intimate acoustic guitar guy’ I realized I knew I had to push myself musically.”

It turns out James not only overhauled his sound, but also his general aesthetic. The video for “Wild Love” drops today and it’s a sleek and sexy adventure that takes place in a club — a venue you wouldn’t associate with anything from Chaos And The Calm. As for the plot? The crooner makes eyes with Stranger Things actress Natalia Dyer while butterflies hover over head. “It was such a pleasure to work with Natalia on the ‘Wild Love’ set,” he enthuses. “She’s a lovely person, a huge talent and it was great hanging with her while making this video.” Watch up top.

James Bay Switches It Up With Synth-Drenched “Wild Love”

James Bay was one of the breakout stars of 2015/2016 with raw rock anthems like “Let It Go” and “Hold Back The River.” His debut album was a mega-seller around the world and he was rewarded with three Grammy nominations. Which makes the Brit’s decision to forgo his signature, stripped-back sound on “Wild Love” rather brave. Instead, the 27-year-old’s new single is a synth-driven, ’80s-evoking soul anthem that wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Prince album — obviously, one of the biggest compliments you can pay an artist.

“I know some of this new sound was not apparent on my first album – there were hints, perhaps – but I think my new music helps to paint a fuller picture of who I am,” James says of his new direction. “As soon as I recognized I was being pinned down as ‘the intimate acoustic guitar guy’ I realized I knew I had to push myself musically. I want it as part of my arsenal, but I don’t want that solely to define me.” It seems the hitmaker has serious plans for the singer/songwriter genre.

“I’m not there yet, but hope that this new music can do for singer/songwriter, loosely, what Drake and Chance The Rapper are doing for their genre: tearing up the rule book.” What’s his new single about? “The experience of falling for someone,” James reveals. “Something you can feel immediately when you meet them for the first time, or which rekindles throughout a relationship. It’s also about yearning for someone — whether that’s the person you can’t keep your eyes off across the room, or in my experience, the person you don’t stop thinking about wherever you are in the world.”
