Sam Smith picks up where he left on new single “Too Good At Goodbyes.” Co-produced by long-time collaborator Jimmy Napes and Stargate, the Brit returns with a soulful ballad about the end of a relationship. Well, more specifically about one doomed to failure because of his battered heart. “I’m never gonna let you close to me, even though you mean the most to me,” he croons. “Cause every time I open up, it hurts.” That leads us to the mournful, gospel-tinged chorus: “I’m way too good at goodbyes.” Think “Stay With Me” but less hopeful.
“This song is about a relationship I was in and it’s basically about getting good at getting dumped,” Sam explains in the press release. “It’s been a long while since I’ve put any music out and I feel that this first single sets the tone of what is to come.” In that case, we all might need to stock up on tissues because “Too Good At Goodbyes” isn’t exactly optimistic. The 25-year-old will promote the release with a string of intimate shows beginning September 11 in Los Angeles, which will no doubt introduce more new material.
