Louis Tomlinson made great headway in establishing his solo career with the release of his pop/rock anthem “Miss You” last week. With production from Afterhrs and a writing credit from the UK crooner’s longtime collaborator Julian Bunetta, the track signified a return to his One Direction roots. It felt more authentic than his previous forays into EDM and received a warm reception. Today (December 8), the hitmaker is hoping to give the track a push up the charts with the unveiling of its official music video.
The visual is a fairly straightforward effort that stays true to the song’s lyrics. In it a somber Louis is distracted from pining over a former flame by a horde of friends. He and his lads hit the bars to drink away his pain, and he seems to be having a good time. However, as the night goes on, he gets lost in his memories. As the group moves on to another party, he delivers some appropriately moody glances that are perfectly contrasted by the neon-drenched atmosphere. The 25-year-old emotes well, and the visual is a nice if fairly predictable outing.
“Miss You” could shape up to be a breakthrough moment for the former One Directioner. Unlike his fellow bandmates, his previous releases have felt a little directionless as he has attempted to find a sound that sticks. His latest manages to both look forward while paying tribute to his past. Will it be enough to launch his career to the level of success Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne have enjoyed since going solo? With the right push it is entirely possible.
