Demi Lovato Talks Living in a ‘Mental Prison’ on Jameela Jamil Podcast

Reese Witherspoon says she still feels marginalized in corporate boardrooms dominated by men. Demi Lovato describes living in a “mental prison” and battling an eating disorder that was triggered by extreme bullying in middle school. Those are just some of the frank conversations on Jameela Jamil’s podcast, I Weigh with Jameela Jamil, which takes aim at shame in all its forms.

On the weekly podcast, which premiered April 2, the actress and activist speaks candidly about her own shame, struggles with body image, a suicide attempt when she was 26 and how she’s coping with quarantine (“I smell,” she admitted, laughing). Her guests also lay themselves bare, revealing deeply personal struggles and pain.

Lovato spoke with Jamil about learning to accept herself after an apparent drug overdose in 2018. “My body survived something insane, a near-death experience, and I’m here today,” the pop star said. “It’s OK for me to look in the mirror and be like, ‘I’m not where I want to be.’” Jamil said she is not after headlines or trying to “get” her guests. She just wants listeners to know they’re not alone and shouldn’t be ashamed. Of anything.

“This is happening even to the happiest, most together and successful perfect people on Earth,” the 34-year-old London native and The Good Place star said recently from her home in Los Angeles. “You shouldn’t feel bad about your struggle if the most privileged people on the planet are going through similar things.”

The podcast comes two years after Jamil began the “I Weigh” movement, sparked after she stumbled across online photos labeling female celebrities with their weights. Outraged, Jamil tweeted what she weighed not in terms of pounds but in terms of worth, like her relationships and successes, kicking off a slew of similar responses from women sick of being reduced to a number on a scale. Jamil dives deep with her guests. Witherspoon teared up while speaking of women’s seemingly never-ending struggle for equality and respect, Billy Porter opened up about the painful experiences in his childhood that led to mental health struggles, and Beanie Feldstein talks about how she’s perfectly happy being, in her word, “chubby.”

“It shocks me how open they are,” Jamil said. “And it makes me feel a lot of love towards them. And I think in particular, there’s something about this moment where people want to connect with one another and empathize with one another.”

Jamil thinks her guests open up to her partly because of how much she herself shares and for how outspoken she’s been about taboo subjects in Hollywood. She regularly takes aim at the broader media landscape and how women are judged or pitted against one another. She calls out celebrities and influencers for promoting unhealthy diet products, including the Kardashians, Amber Rose and Cardi B. And she’s fought to protect minors from seeing such advertisements on social media.

Jamil says her activism has cost her financially and sometimes emotionally but that she has no plans to slow down. “All that matters is that I get through to kids to make them feel less ashamed of their mental illness and less ashamed of the way they look. And I inform them of all of the lies that they have been told,” she said. “That’s all I’m interested in. This isn’t my popularity contest.” Feldstein, known for her roles in Lady Bird and Booksmart, said she admires Jamil’s bravery.

“She’s so beautifully open and I really admire that in her,” said Feldstein, who was the first guest on Jamil’s podcast. “She’s really just a powerhouse in that she’s unrelentingly open and she has such a beautiful energy.” Jamil isn’t just interviewing celebrities on the podcast. Her second guest was former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who discussed the health impact of loneliness. Upcoming guests include feminist icon Gloria Steinem, #MeToo movement founder Tarana Burke and novelist Roxane Gay.

As for her other dream guests? At the top of Jamil’s list are Tom Hanks (“almighty unproblematic fave”), Whoopi Goldberg (she’s “always been my idol”) and Angelina Jolie, who Jamil describes as a role model. “There’s something about seeing someone incredibly famous, incredibly loved and celebrated open up about their vulnerabilities and their struggles,” Jamil said. “It demystifies it and destigmatizes it, and it reaches more people because of the size of their platform and star.”

Selena Gomez’s ‘Friends’ Fandom Is Put to the Test With Some (Seriously Tough) Trivia

Selena Gomez poses at the photo call for the film ‘The Dead Don’t Die’ at the 72nd international film festival on May 15, 2019 in Cannes, France.

Could this be any more amazing? Selena Gomez recently put her Friends knowledge to the test while chatting with Interview Magazine.

The 29-question quizzed the widely known superfan on everything from Joey’s stuffed penguin’s name and Monica’s biggest pet peeve to serious deep cuts like which of Joey’s sisters Chandler made out with and what costume Gunther wore to Monica and Chandler’s Halloween party.

Overall, Gomez did a pretty impressive job, nailing 18 of the 29 questions, but she wasn’t too thrilled with the result. «Ah, I’m a little rusty,» she admitted.

«Alright, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been watching some Will & Grace lately,» she jokingly revealed.

Gomez’s challenge comes just months after fellow Friends lover Charlie Puth got tested on his knowledge from Courteney Cox herself for Billboard‘s «Quizzed» series. Puth didn’t do a bad job either, earning himself a Geller Cup trophy, complete with his name listed on the bottom as the 2019 winner.

Alicia Keys on Staying at Home With Her Family, New Meaning of Her Song ‘Underdog’

alicia keys, new book, more myself memoir

«We are so close to our mortality. Anybody at any moment — you don’t know when the time will come,» Alicia Keys says.

Alicia Keys’ new book, More Myself, isn’t your typical celebrity autobiography. Keys charts her path from growing up in Hell’s Kitchen to winning 15 Grammys (and hosting the show twice), but she also calls in famous friends for help: Bono, Oprah, Jay-Z, and husband Swizz Beats each open up chapters with their favorite memories of the singer. Keys says the book is a testament to years of working to take down the “armor” she’s spent a lifetime keeping up.

“I’m more open than I’ve ever been,” she says. “Allowing yourself to be who you are is a much more comfortable place to exist in.” Keys, whose next album, Alicia, is due out later this year, talked to us as she self-quarantined with her family at home in New York City.

How have you and your family been handling being stuck at home?
We actually are pleasantly surprised that we’re doing all right with each other. We love a good Monopoly game. We’ve been cooking together. We also do a little run or a little workout together in some capacity. We’re trying to create a schedule so we can keep up a normal energy to some degree. But it is definitely strange.

What music has been comforting for you these days?

I love classics: Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill. There’s one artist that I’m super loving named Chika. DJ Tony Touch is somebody that I’ll play a lot if he’ll do a radio show, and just the energy feels really good. I also love meditative music if I’m feeling a little more down or just a little bit more anxious. My husband and Timbaland have been putting on these “Verzuz” battles on Instagram [where each producer plays snippets of their hits and an online audience decides the winner] that I think have been getting a lot of people through.

Do you think you’re going to get in on the “Verzuz” action?
You never know. I might be up in there. I’ve heard people are requesting me and John Legend, piano to piano.

What made you want to have friends like Michelle Obama and Jay-Z contribute to your book?
There’s just something really powerful about seeing it from other different vantage points.

Those are pretty busy people. Who had the most trouble making deadline?
Maybe Bono. He wrote to me one day: He’s like, “Alicia, I forgot to tell an adult that I had to turn this in, and now no one’s been able to hold me to task. I forgot.” He’s so amazing, and he’s such a brother.

You have so many of these wonderful stories in the book about encountering your heroes. I love the one about Prince.
I had to get his permission to [cover] “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore” on Songs in A Minor. I had to call him, which is literally one of the scariest things I ever did in my life, trying to pick up the phone knowing that you had to convince your favorite person on the planet, who often says no to his compositions being redone. But he was so gracious.

He invited me to Paisley Park. He said, “Why don’t you come play the song for me?” So I went to freezing-cold Minneapolis. Walking those halls and seeing all those beautiful memorabilia, just all of these incredible moments in his life, and these pianos that were engraved, and he had candles and doves and the outfits from Purple Rain. My jaw was on the floor the entire time. And then he told me that I couldn’t curse, which is really hard for me because I love to curse.

There’s a great story about how “Empire State of Mind” almost didn’t happen because Jay-Z couldn’t get a hold of you. How different would your career have been if that song hadn’t happened?
Oh, my gosh. It was such a pivotal point in my musical career, and his too. To this day he talks about how in awe he is that the biggest song that he’s ever had is about our hometown. It would have been a shame if that didn’t happen.

In January, you hosted the Grammy Awards for the second time. Do you think that you’ll host again, next year?
I don’t know how the whole Grammy thing is going to pan out. It’s definitely been a great two years, I have to say, even with the deep shadow of Kobe and Gigi Bryant and all the other people that were on the helicopter with them passing away [just before this year’s ceremony].

I was grateful that I could be a part of creating some type of calm for all of us because that was such a shock, and it was literally just hours before the show. We are so close to our mortality. Anybody at any moment — you don’t know when the time will come.

Your single “Underdog” has been getting a lot of attention lately, especially after you dedicated it to medical professionals on the livestreamed Concert for America in March. What inspired you to do that?
Seeing the first responders and the medical professionals and the unsung heroes who are out there trying to care for people who are suffering is just incredible. I actually feel a great sense of hope from everybody connecting and feeling an empathy for each other right now.

Demi Lovato Says She’s ‘Open to Anything’ When It Comes to Her Dating Life

Demi Lovato

There’s no denying that 2020 has been a big year for Demi Lovato. After making her triumphant return at the Grammys, the star has already released two new singles, teased major collaborations, and has a brand new album on its way.

But the star has also spent much of 2020 being as honest as possible with her fans (and her family). In her new cover story with Harper’s Bazaar, Lovato opened up once again about her dating life, saying that she’s still interested in both men and women and isn’t entirely sure who she’ll end up with later on in life.

«When I imagine my life in the future, I don’t say, ‘I’m looking for a man who I want to have two or three kids with,'» she said. «I think it could be so much fun to share children with a woman … So I don’t know what my future will look like, and I’m open to anything.»

The star elaborated, saying that when it comes to the people she dates, she’s not necessarily looking for anything in particular. «People always ask me, ‘What’s your type?’ And I’m like, ‘Have you seen my history?’ There is no type,» she said. «It is solely off connection. I wish I could say, ‘I only date attractive people.’ But I don’t.»

However, all of those concerns have been put on the backburner by Demi, who said that after being locked out of her own Raya account, she decided to take it as a sign. «I was like, ‘You know what? It’s fine. I don’t need to be on this because I think I’m supposed to be alone right now.’

Billie Eilish Is Kind of Loving Self-Quarantining: ‘I Like Being Alone’

The lockdown has been hard on everyone. Without seeing friends, going out to dinner or doing just about anything we’re used to, a lot of us are starting to go a bit stir crazy — but not Billie Eilish.

The «Everything I Wanted» singer appeared on the German Telekom Electronic Beatspodcast this week and talked about how she’s dealing with being stuck in her room at her parents’ house.

“I’ve been really enjoying being alone… It’s been nice. I feel like everybody on the Internet has been on FaceTime all day long with their friends,» the 18-year-old singer told Derek Opperman, noting that she’s got a full-time job right now fostering two puppies named for To Kill a Mockingbird characters, Jim and Miss Maudie. «I haven’t had this much time off since I was 12.»

Eilish has spoken before about how fame has caused some friendship issues, but she said she’s working hard to figure out how to meld her super busy schedule with their equally busy ones. «The weird thing is, like, normally when I’m home is the only time I get to see them, and now I’m stuck home finally and I can’t see them, which is super weird,» she said.

She’s not really Zooming or HousePartying, and if she’s being honest, she’s digging the silence. “I love my friends, I can’t wait to see them, I do miss them a lot, but at the same time, I’m good,» she said. «I’m good being alone – I like being alone… As soon as we can see people again and go out,» she added, «we’re going to be so happy and grateful.»

But, she joked, «in about three days, we’re all going to take it for granted again. That’s the way people work. It’s the way humans are made. You miss something so bad once you don’t have it. You never think about it when you have it.»

Eilish also spoke about her abiding love for Los Angeles, the power of saying «no» and her steadfast refusal to speculate on what her future life will be like. «I don’t really want to picture it because I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I also don’t want to think about it sucking,» she said. «Hopefully it’s good… I’m gonna try to just live in the moment and not worry what the future holds.»

The singer recently appeared on Elton John’s Living Room Concert for America fundraiser and James Corden’s Homefest: Late Late Show special after postponing her planned March and April Where Do We Go? tour dates due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

She also got Tim Cook to agree to a huge donation from Apple.

A major effort deserves a major push and on Monday night (April 6) Lady Gaga made history by appearing on all the major late night talk shows to announce the lineup for the Global Citizen/World Health Organization  «One World: Together at Home» concert. After a brief appearance last week on The Tonight Show during which she didn’t say much, but promised big news, Gaga was back Zooming with Jimmy Fallon from her home office to first reveal who is hosting the prime time event.

«Would you like to know who’s hosting?» she asked Fallon, who eagerly said yes just hours after the full lineup of the show was announced. «You… I got Jimmy Fallon and guess who else I got?» she asked, holding up a pink Post-It note with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel’s name on it as well. The late night giants will come together to help host the show on NBC, CBS and ABC. «The thing I’ve been most excited about is when I talk to people and I just see everyone want to jump in and help and be a part of it,» Gaga said of the two-hour show (8-10 p.m. ET) that will air on April 18.

Gaga noted that the cast of Sesame Street will also be in the house, as well as actors and athletes for a show she hopes will put a spotlight on the «global, kind community that’s coming together right now,» with a focus on the medical teams doing the brave frontline work, as well as what she said was the «kind» cultural moment we’re all experiencing and the strength of the human spirit in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announced artist lineup for the show will include: Gaga, Alanis Morissette, Andrea Bocelli, Billie Eilish, Billy Joe Armstrong, Burna Boy, Chris Martin, David Beckham, Eddie Vedder, Elton John, Finneas, Idris and Sabrina Elba, J Balvin, John Legend, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban, Kerry Washington, Lang Lang, Lizzo, Maluma, Sir Paul McCartney, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Shah Rukh Khan and Stevie Wonder; the event will be broadcast live on ABC, NBC and ViacomCBS networks and iHeartMedia in the U.S. and Bell Media platforms in Canada and on BBC One, and stream on Alibaba, Amazon Prime Video, Apple, beIN Media Group, Facebook, Instagram, LiveXLive, Tencent, Tencent Music Entertainment Group, TIDAL, TuneIn, Twitch, Twitter, Yahoo and YouTube.

Gaga stressed that the show isn’t a telethon or a fundraiser, since she’s already raised $35 million, including generous donations from IBM and Cisco, and, in a live call on Fallon, Apple CEO Tim Cook, who FaceTimed in to the show to confirm a «sizable» donation to the cause.

“Of course we appreciate everything that Apple has done already to support the COVID-19 [relief effort]. As the CEO of Apple, we’re very grateful to you,” Gaga told Cook.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live! Gaga said she hasn’t left the house in a month and has spent most of the time in quarantine making calls to more than 68 philanthropists and corporate donors to fundraise for the show so that people at home didn’t have to worry about donating during the broadcast. «The truth is that I feel very blessed that I have a home. I feel blessed that I have access to good food and that it’s healthy and clean and I wanted to figure out what I could do with my time to be of service,» she told Kimmel.

Lady Gaga Flexes Her ‘Chromatica’ Claws in New Album Cover Art: See the Pics

Lady Gaga has revealed the cover art for her upcoming sixth album, Chromatica, and it could pass as the still from a fierce, fabulous sci-fi action flick.

In a series of photos she shared on Sunday (April 5), Gaga rolls with the aesthetic she introduced in the music video for «Stupid Love,» Chromatica’s first single. The cotton candy-pink hair is back, but Chromatica‘s cover is a bit darker and sharper than the vibrant desert dance party of «Stupid Love» and the bold magenta graphicwith the album’s logo she previously introduced.

Think Mad Max: Fury Road meets Alien, but with a Haus of Gaga twist: wearing galactic armor (and a pair of platform boots with a tusk and a knife for its heels), the pop star is lying across the grate of a metal structure and beneath the steely wave of Chromatica‘s insignia. One hand is covered in talons, the other a shoulder-to-fingertip sleeve covered in spikes.

The vinyl record and cassette cover feature Gaga in a different pose, this time with even longer claws and shimmering fuchsia shoulder pads.

The graphics arrive days after she announced that Chromatica‘s release — which was originally scheduled for May — would be postponed in light of the global coronavirus pandemic. She assured her fans then that she’d have «surprises» to keep them excited about Chromatica in the coming weeks, and these visuals definitely give Little Monsters something to savor as they await news of her new album release date.

Lady Gaga Went on ‘Fallon’ to Make a Major Announcement, But it Didn’t Quite Go as Planned

Jimmy Fallon and Lady Gaga on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Lady Gaga called in to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday (April 1) for what host Jimmy Fallon promised was a major announcement, but things didn’t go exactly as planned.

As soon as the FaceTime call connected, the pop star seemed confused, apologizing profusely that she couldn’t reveal her news just yet. «I can’t, Jimmy,» Gaga said. «I can’t talk right now. I’m really sorry. It’s just, like, a really weird time right no. Hello? Jimmy? I can’t see you? Am I on TV?»

Promising the big news was «for COVID-19,» a flustered Gaga explained that she simply didn’t have all her proverbial ducks in a row to make the announcement quite yet. «I can’t, I can’t, I can’t tell you everything right now because I’m still ironing out the details and I have a lot of phone calls to make,» she said.

The late night host took the unexpected left turn in stride, only to be quickly interrupted by Mother Monster seemingly receiving a phone call from someone on her team. When Fallon asked if calling back in 10 minutes would be better for the star, Gaga hit him with a proposed date a bit further out. «Can you call me on, um, can you call me Friday?» she asked, leading the host to respond, «Can I call you on Friday? It’s uh, yeah. It’s Wednesday.»

The scheduling conflict didn’t stop there though. Just a few minutes later, Gaga called back, wearing a new pair of upside-down glasses and appearing even more distressed. «Hello, I’m sorry,» she said before pushing the reveal back even further. «Can we just move our time? Yeah, can we do it Monday. I promise we’ll do it Monday.»

Whatever the superstar has in the works, it looks like Little Monster will be waiting at least through the weekend to find out what she has up her sleeve…

Watch Niall Horan Perform ‘Dear Patience’ on ‘Fallon’

Niall Horan joined Jimmy Fallon for the most recent edition of The Tonight Show, filmed at home in Fallon’s house during the COVID-19 pandemic, to perform “Dear Patience.”

Appearing via video chat at the 7:45 minute mark, Horan discussed his new album, Heartbreak Weather, and how he’s coping with self-quarantine. “It’s crazy, I’ve never Zoom-ed in my life, but here we are,” Horan said, speaking from his apartment in London. Horan added that he’s been penning some new music during his time alone at home. “I wrote a couple of tunes,” he told Fallon. “Definitely finding it relatively hard to get motivated when all I can do is sit in my living room.”

Horan added that he’s happy with how well his album has done since release. “It was a lot of fun to make,” he said. “I had a great time making it. It’s a bit of a shame that I had to release it amongst all of this, but you can’t win every week. It went to No. 1 in the U.K. and Ireland, which was huge for me… It’s a weird time, but a good time.”

The pair also compared their golf games during the video chat and talked about all the touring opportunities Horan has had to put on hold before the singer took on “Dear Patience,” which comes in at the 18:20 mark. “It’s an album track, but I just thought it was very relevant right now because I wrote it at a time when I needed to be patient,” Horan explained. “And if anyone needs to be patient right now it’s all of us.”

Horan released Heartbreak Weather earlier this month. He recently performed a livestream concert for Global Citizen and the World Health Organization’s Together at Home virtual concert series and played several tracks off the album.

Daenerys Targaryen Fucked Up Meeting Beyoncé

The Mother of Dragons can’t even handle meeting Beyoncé.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night, Emilia Clarke talked about briefly meeting the pop star at an Academy Awards afterparty. Beyoncé is, unsurprisingly, a Game of Thrones fan. Stars, they’re just like us!

Okay, humble brag, but go on. “I think I started crying,” she says, making the dorkiest noise possible. “Exactly that noise came out of my mouth. And she was like, ‘Hey this is uncomfortable now. I thought you’d be cool, you’re not cool, bye.’ And I was like, ‘No, can I get you a drink?’”

Clarke says she wants another shot when she can control herself. Can you really blame her for messing it up the first time?
