Camila Cabello rolled out the video for her current single, “Never Be The Same,” and it is a suitably sultry and love-struck extravaganza. Released today (March 8), it blends home footage with glamorous scenes of the siren wearing chic looks to break down the barrier between romance and fantasy. Directed by Grant Singer, the 21-year-old’s latest offering is a fitting follow-up to the nostalgic video of home footage she released at the end of 2017.
This time around, the footage captures Camila relaxing in a sunny hotel room with a lover behind the camera’s lens. “Stop, turn this off,” she says when she realizes what he is doing. Instead, the visual morphs and begins incorporating scenes of the hitmaker on various whimsical set pieces. She poses around cavernous rocks, delivers strong looks within a futuristic box and showcases serious hairography while in an ocean. These moments effortlessly transition back to amorous footage of her with her loved one, implying they have created their own fantasy land to escape reality together.
Now that Camila has turned her attention toward “Never Be The Same,” it is likely to race to the upper reaches of the charts. As it stands, the single is sitting comfortably within the top 20 most streamed songs in the US on Spotify and is within the top 10 on US iTunes. Just this week it reached a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100 and is sitting within striking distance of the top 20 at number 24. With any luck, views from the video will give it the push it needs to reach a new peak.
As her breakout single “Havana” begins to cool on the charts, it is nice to see the budding superstar readying a new release to dominate the spring quarter. It is also interesting to see her grow up before our eyes. While her last visual was a tongue-in-chic mini-movie, her latest is a sophisticated masterpiece. Check it out up top!
