Dua Lipa live at Studio 2054: a big night in with a pop great who excels at escapism

0

When the pandemic first hit and normality was pulled out from under our feet, Dua Lipa’s second album ‘Future Nostalgia’ was one of the first new records to provide some escape. A series of infectious and fun disco gems, it brought the glitzy, sticky thrill of nights out into our homes, urging you to push the furniture aside, turn the lights off and forget all your new pandemic fears.

Seven months on, with the UK back in lockdown and coronavirus still commanding the globe, the pop star has found a new way to take us out of this moment. For her first livestream concert, Lipa has built an alternate reality – one where you can still run wild in a warehouse all night, indulging in excess and ecstasy, running from one room to another in search of the perfect soundtrack to your nocturnal adventures.

Dubbed Studio 2054, it’s an aesthetic wonderland of neon and glitter, sequins and mirrorballs, and its creator performance elevates it from pretty place to pop paradise. She begins on a podium for ‘Future Nostalgia’, dancers grooving around her as she sets the tone for the night with the playful, alluring track. The sublime ‘Levitating’ offers up the first glimpse of a choreographed routine, Lipa and her troupe matching the song’s light-hearted lyrics with equally fun moves, while, later, ‘Cool’ pairs gentle yearning with the star being transformed into the entertainment at a roller disco.

Although Lipa could more than craft and control this fantasy land by herself, it’s a special occasion and she’s roped in some friends to help out. FKA Twigs previews the duo’s collaboration ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’ for the first time, spinning seductively around a pole and whispering, “Why don’t you love me anymore?” over a minimal, glitchy beat. Towards the end, Studio 2054’s architect joins her and things change gear, their voices rasping as they yell: “You hurt me in a world like this / You’re dead when I say so.”

During a segment that takes things into a grimy club, Kylie Minogue drops by to deliver her own sultry disco track ‘Real Groove’ before helping out on Lipa’s Silk City collab ‘Electricity’. DJ The Blessed Madonna, who helmed the recent remix album ‘Club Future Nostalgia’, commands the decks, mixing Gwen Stefani’s ‘Hollaback Girl’ with ‘Physical’, and Belgian singer Angèle crashes Dua’s dressing room to bring the sticky, bilingual pop of ‘Fever’ to the night.

There’s no shortage to the star power to help Lipa out with her big night, though one guest feels shoehorned in. After ‘Electricity’, Elton John appears on a screen, playing a beautiful version of his classic ‘Rocket Man’. Before he finishes, though, he’s cut off, the cameras panning to another part of the warehouse where Lipa launches into ‘Hallucinate’. With no link to the rest of the set, it ends up feeling random – at best, like a room you’ve temporarily dipped into to find lost friends; at worst, a filler while Lipa takes a breather and changes outfits. It’s a missed opportunity to see what a team-up between a legend and one of pop’s current greats would look like.

That slight blip aside, Studio 2054 goes some way to completing Lipa’s evolution from good to great that started with the release of ‘Future Nostalgia’. Although the routines on show tonight aren’t the most complex, they flesh out her performance enough that now she has the songs, the personality and the presence that all true icons possess. Hopefully next time we get to witness them, we’ll no longer need her to use them to transport us out of our own homes.

Zendaya gives fans a first glimpse of ‘Euphoria’ special

0

Zendaya has shared the first look at new Euphoria episodes on her Instagram account.

The actress, who plays the lead role of Rue in the HBO show, teased the upcoming bridge episodes between the first and second seasons with a new poster.

Two special episodes will be released before season two eventually begins, as production on the follow-up season was delayed in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The first, titled ‘Trouble Don’t Last Always’, will be streaming from December 6. The episode will follow Rue celebrating the festive season, and was written and directed by showrunner Sam Levinson.

Earlier this year, Zendaya had explained why Euphoria was opting for potential bridge episodes between seasons. “We’re trying to figure out how to eventually be able to create a season two that we’re all really proud of and get all the best out of it that we want, but also still being very safe,” the actress explained.

She also explained how season two was well underway before the global lockdown was enforced in March. “We were headed into season two and we had done table reads and wardrobe fittings and all kinds of things and then obviously everything happened and we got shut down, literally like two days before we were about to start the first day of shooting.”

The Weeknd alleges Grammys corruption after nominations snub

0

Since the nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards were announced on Tuesday afternoon, the conversation among fans, pop critics, and industry insiders has circled around one notable absence: the Weeknd.

The Canadian pop star’s After Hours, released in March, was one of 2020’s biggest commercial success stories, with 1.8 billion streams to date, according to Alpha Data. Its second single, “Blinding Lights,” became a blockbuster with help from a popular TikTok dance trend, with 882 million streams. Despite those metrics — plus a high level of visibility on other awards shows and events including the upcoming Super Bowl, and a widespread expectation in the industry that he would be a favorite heading into next year’s awards — the Weeknd received zero nominations for the 2021 Grammys.

A source close to the situation alleges that the Weeknd’s shutout followed weeks of discussions about a possible performance at the January ceremony. “There were many conversations between the Grammys and the Weeknd team about his performance slated for the 2021 Grammys,” the source says. “There was an ultimatum given resulting in a struggle over him also playing the Super Bowl that went on for some time and was eventually agreed upon that he would perform at both events… [The Recording Academy] had all these convos with the Weeknd team in the past month, and today on November 24th, the Weeknd had not one nomination and is now completely ignored by the Grammys.”

Adds the same source: “This was the year that they were supposed to rise up. What is the process and where is the transparency?”

“We understand that the Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration,” Recording Academy Chair and Interim President/CEO Harvey Mason Jr. tells Rolling Stone in a statement.

“We would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before [the Super Bowl],” he adds. “Unfortunately, every year, there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists … To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd’s performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process,” Mason Jr says. “All Grammy nominees are recognized by the voting body for their excellence, and we congratulate them all.”

The Recording Academy has faced persistent criticism in recent years for a lack of transparency in the awards process. After being ousted as leader in early 2020, former CEO Deborah Dugan accused the organization of corruption and a “boys’ club” mentality. (The academy repeatedly denied her allegations, but touted its efforts to grow and diversify the voting body.)

The Recording Academy’s treatment of black artists who make music outside of traditional genre categories has also been a source of tension. Earlier this year, Tyler, the Creator denounced the Best Urban Contemporary Album category — which the Weeknd has won twice in the past — as unfairly reductive, arguing that the word “urban” was “a politically correct way to say the n-word.” The Academy responded by changing the name of that category to Best Progressive R&B Album.

In an interview for the cover story of Rolling Stone‘s special Grammys preview issue in September, the Weeknd voiced a similar complaint about the way the category limits artists, regardless of its name. “It was peculiar,” the singer said. “Putting an album like Starboy and putting an album like Beauty Behind the Madness in the same category as some other artists, it’s not fair…. R&B and black music is such a wide variety. If they put us all into one category, I still think it’s not fair. We’ll see how it goes.”

Other artists were also surprised and displeased by the Weeknd’s snubbing. “Abel was robbed man this shits weak,” tweeted Kid Cudi. Elton John — who is listed as a cowriter on After Hours, since the Weeknd interpolates his 1970 classic “Your Song” on one of its tracks — weighed in on Instagram to say that he felt “Blinding Lights” deserved Record of the Year and Song of the Year consideration. Tinashe responded to a tweet about the Weeknd’s lack of nominations with a series of trash-can emojis.

Taylor Swift releasing new ‘Folklore’ documentary on Disney+ tonight

0

Taylor Swift is set to release a new documentary following the creation of her quarantine album ‘Folklore’ tonight (November 24).

‘folklore: the long pond studio sessions’ gets its name from the Hudson, New York studio owned by the album’s producer and The National guitarist Aaron Dessner. It will come out on the Disney+ streaming service tonight.

“Well it’s 11/24 and 24-11=13 so I’ve got an announcement,” Swift wrote on Twitter, announcing the documentary and sharing a trailer.

She added: “You haven’t seen this film before. folklore: the long pond studio sessions will be out tonight at midnight PST on Disney+.”

“This album allows you to feel your feelings,” Swift says of ‘Folklore’ in the trailer, adding: “It turns out that everybody needed a good cry as well as us.”

Reviewing the singer’s quarantine album, NME wrote: ‘Folklore’ feels fresh, forward-thinking and, most of all, honest. The glossy production she’s lent on for the past half-decade is cast aside for simpler, softer melodies and wistful instrumentation.

“It’s the sound of an artist who’s bored of calculated releases and wanted to try something different. Swift disappeared into the metaphorical woods while writing ‘Folklore’, and she’s emerged stronger than ever.”

Last month, ‘Folklore’ became the first million-selling album of 2020. The album returned to the top of the Billboard chart at the end of October, selling 57,000 copies and taking its total number sold to 1.038million.

‘Folklore’ becomes the ninth Taylor Swift album to reach a million sales, with her eight studio albums plus Christmas album ‘The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection’ also reaching the milestone.

It follows ‘Lover’, Swift’s seventh album from 2019, picking up the accolade of the only album of last year to sell a million copies.

Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa’s new song ‘Prisoner’ is a disco-punk anthem

0

It has been a rocky 2020 in more ways than one: this year has seen everyone from Rina Sawayama and Machine Gun Kelly pull influence from the genres of rock and metal (sending many a neckbeard into a frenzy of Caps Lock comments in the process). Miley Cyrus’ forthcoming seventh album ‘Plastic Hearts’ looks to do the same. Lead single ‘Midnight Sky’, released over summer, is a Fleetwood Mac-sampling stadium anthem, while the Dua Lipa featuring ‘Prisoner’ is more rough and ready.

It’s not a passing phase. Miley has a history of covering everyone from Metallica and Blondie to Nine Inch Nails. Even when she was coming in like a wrecking ball, she was performing with punk icon Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace in her backyard to raise money for her Happy Hippie Foundation. She’s always been at her best blending bubblegum pop with something a little grittier and ‘Prisoner’ captures that raucous energy perfectly.

Dua Lipa might be the odd one out on a tracklist that also includes guest spots from old skool rockstars Joan Jett and Billy Idol, but she’s the perfect partner in crime for Miley, as they take the basement snarl of punk and give it some ’80s disco  swagger. Pop music with bite, or grunge with a little razzle-dazzle? Either way, it’s the best of both their worlds.

‘Prisoner’ also sees the stars draw influence from Olivia Newton-John’s raunchy ’80s classic ‘Physical’ – but in true 2020 spirit, this track is about feeling trapped in your own emotions rather than lusty contact (hardly COVID-friendly). Packed with attitude and big on Thelma and Louise energy, the track gives Dua’s excitably shiny ‘Future Nostalgia’ space to shine without forcing Miley out of the spotlight. They elevate each other rather than competing. If only every collaboration had this balance.

And don’t be fooled by the isolation-inspired angst (“Strung out on a feeling, my hands are tied / Your face on my ceiling, I fantasise”) because Dua and Miley aren’t standing for anyone’s nonsense. With the bloodstained video – which sees the duo cruising through the US in a kind of goth bus – coming with the dedication “in loving memory all my exes – eat shit”, this heartache anthem is a glam declaration of independence that goes off like a cherry bomb.

This year, both artists have come into their own and taken on the world. True to the song’s title, Miley and Dua really don’t take any prisoners here.

Shawn Mendes & Justin Bieber Face the ‘Monster’ Inside In Powerful New Single: Watch

0

Shawn Mendes called on his musical idol Justin Bieber to collaborate on a poignant new song, «Monster,» which details the pitfalls of superstardom.

«I think I was coming off the back of a couple of big songs and definitely just so driven by my ego and just feeling like something in this feels not right,» Mendes recently told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe of the collaboration. «And it’s always resonated with me. This song has always resonated with me and it just never found its way out. And now all of a sudden I was listening to it one day, and I just started my relationship with Justin. It just started forming properly in the last three months. And I called him and I was like, ‘Look, I have this song. It’s kind of going there.’ We go there.»

«It’s about how society can put celebrities up on a pedestal and watch them fall and it seems to be this entertainment thing. And it’s hard,» he continued. «And his heart fell deep into it. And him and I, even yesterday, were on the phone for an hour and had the deepest conversation, I think, about so much. And it just felt really nice because it was a full circle moment for me, this guy who was the reason I started singing. I was nine when «One Time» came out, and I completely was all in.He was Elvis to me. And to come back around and to have this very human to human conversation with him and his truth to come into that song and my truth to be there, it feels like one of the most special songs I’ve ever wrote. And the more I listened to it and the deeper I get into it, this is not just about celebrities. This is the human experience.»

«Monster» follows Mendes’ previously-released track «Wonder,» and both will appear on his upcoming album Wonder, out December 4 via Island Records.

Lady Gaga podría protagonizar su próxima película junto a Brad Pitt

0

Mariah Carey announces new Christmas album and TV special featuring star studded guests

0

Mariah Carey has announced plans for a new Christmas album and TV special next month.

The show, which will premiere on AppleTV+ on December 4, will include musical performances and guest appearances from Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson and Snoop Dogg.

The special will also be accompanied by a soundtrack featuring a new version of Carey’s ‘Oh Santa!’ with Grande and Hudson. She hinted that the team up was on the cards last month.

Last year her classic Christmas single ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’, went to Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, 25 years after its release.

Earlier this month, a music fan shared a yuletide mash-up of Metallica with Mariah Carey blending the instrumental of ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ with James Hetfield’s riffs and vocals from ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’.

Carey also recently revealed that she worked on an alternative rock album back in 1995 before the project was shelved.

Earlier this week, the singer shared a previously unreleased video for her 1995 song ‘Underneath The Stars’.

Taken from her fifth album, ‘Daydream’, the long-lost clip is the latest instalment of the pop star’s year-long #MC30 celebration.

Shot during her ‘Daydream’ promo run, the video for ‘Underneath The Stars’ features behind-the-scenes tour footage, audience clips and shots of Carey singing the track.

Back in 2012, Carey tweeted that a video was made for the song, but said she didn’t know what happened to it. “Little-known fact, I actually shot a video 4 ‘Underneath the Stars’ in France & England that never got released & I don’t know where it is!” she said at the time.
