Camila Cabello Unleashes ‘Made In Miami,’ A Mini-Documentary, With YouTube

0

Camila Cabello opens up about her past and charts her rise to fame in her newly released mini-documentary, Made In Miami. The “Never Be The Same” superstar teamed up with YouTube to unleash the 17-minute special today (February 27). Directed by Tabitha Denholm, it includes exclusive interviews with Cabello and some behind-the-scenes footage from the last year. The purpose is to tell “the story of Camila’s journey from arriving in Miami from Cuba as a kid to finding her voice and releasing her debut album” while also paying tribute to “how generations of strong women have shaped the Cabello family and inspired Camila to become the artist she is today.”

After a quick reminder of all Camila accomplished since parting ways with Fifth Harmony in 2016, the documentary opens with her returning to Miami for a segment of interviews with her family. During this, her mother Sinuhe talks about the family’s decision to leave Cuba in order to pursue a better future for their daughter. Through it all, music played an important role in the pop star’s life. “I was always obsessed with artists and music,” she said. However, she admitted that being shy made it hard for her to perform in front of anyone. That all changed when she tried out for The X-Factor in 2012 and eventually became a global sensation.

As the conversation turns to her budding solo career, additional interviews from Simon CowellCharli XCXFrank Dukes and Cabello’s manager, Roger Gold offer insight into her creative process and her decisions to move on to new ventures. “She wanted the ability to make the record she wanted to make. And then she realized obviously now that people like her music. I mean, the fact that she’s number one on the single and album charts; that’s magic,” Cowell said.

That all started with the breakout success of “Havana.” Dukes, who produced the track, opened up about how the massively viral hit invigorated Camila and inspired her on to greatness. Other topics up for discussion in the documentary include the recording of the rest of Camila and other inspirations on her life. Watch Made In Miami up top and check out an additional Q&A with the hitmaker below!

Camila Cabello’s ‘Havana’ Is First Song by a Woman to Top Pop, Rhythmic & Adult Pop Songs Charts Since 1996

0

«Havana» does what no song had done since Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men’s record smash «One Sweet Day.»

Camila Cabello’s «Havana,» featuring Young Thug, rises 2-1 on Billboard‘s Adult Pop Songs radio airplay chart dated March 3 (which makes for a nice birthday present for Cabello, who was born on that date in 1997).

As «Havana» previously led the Pop Songs chart for seven weeks, beginning Dec. 7, and Rhythmic Songs for three weeks, beginning Jan. 3, the hit is the first by a female artist to simultaneously crown all three airplay tallies in 22 years, since Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s «One Sweet Day.» (Their ballad also ruled the Billboard Hot 100 for 16 weeks, a record matched only by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s «Despacito,» featuring Justin Bieber, last year.)

Among all acts, «Havana» is just the ninth song to have hit No. 1 on the Pop Songs, Rhythmic Songs and Adult Pop Songs airplay charts (over the 22 years that all three lists have coexisted). Here’s a chronological recap:

«One Sweet Day,» Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96
«Livin’ La Vida Loca,» Ricky Martin, 1999
«Mirrors,» Justin Timberlake, 2013
«Blurred Lines,» Robin Thicke feat. T.I. + Pharrell, 2013
«Happy,» Pharrell Williams, 2014
«All of Me,» John Legend, 2014
«Am I Wrong,» Nico & Vinz, 2014
«Uptown Funk!,» Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, 2015
«Havana,» Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug, 2017-18

The Pop Songs chart, which began in 1992 (and just celebrated its 25th anniversary), measures total weekly plays, as tabulated by Nielsen Music, among its reporting panel of mainstream top 40 stations. Rhythmic Songs (also launched in 1992) reflects airplay on rhythmic stations that span pop to R&B/hip-hop, while Adult Pop Songs (begun in Billboard magazine in 1996) ranks songs on adult top 40 stations.

(Notably, seven of the nine multi-format No. 1s above have joined the exclusive club in the past five years. That could be attributed partly to the adult pop format’s lean this decade toward a more mainstream pop sound after years of favoring pop-rock, as such acts as Maroon 5, Katy Perry, P!nk and Taylor Swift have supplanted a host of guitar-based bands.)

Cabello earns her first Adult Pop Songs No. 1. As a member of Fifth Harmony, which she departed in December 2016, she rose as high as No. 18 on the chart with the group’s «Work From Home,» featuring Ty Dolla $ign, that July.

«Havana» previously topped the all-genre, streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot 100 dated Jan. 27, the same week that her debut solo album Camila debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Meanwhile, «Havana» follow-up «Never Be the Same,» which has reached No. 27 on the Hot 100 (Feb. 17), climbs 15-14 on the March 3-dated Pop Songs chart, 24-22 on Rhythmic Songs and 30-28 on Adult Pop Songs.

Dua Lipa Explains Why She Picked Kanye West Over Taylor Swift in 2016 Interview

0

Last year, Dua Lipa caused controversy among Taylor Swift fans when an old interview of her “choosing” Kanye West over Swift in a game resurfaced.

Many fans took the message personally. According to Lipa, ”They were sending me snake emojis for, like, three days straight. They’re like, ‘I hope you die.’ I’m like, ‘Yo! I literally didn’t say anything.'»

Now, the “New Rules” singer is clearing the air when it comes to what she meant. «I wasn’t thinking about their beef,» she told Rolling Stone. «I was thinking about their music, and Taylor is amazing, but I’m such a hip-hop fan that I would probably choose Kanye over anyone.»

There’s An Ariana Grande Feature On Troye Sivan’s New LP

0

Troye Sivan dropped something of a bombshell when he sat down for a chat with Nick Grimshaw on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show this morning (February 23). “I’ve got at least one feature on the album and I’m so, so, so excited about it. I think it’s… I really, first of all I just love the song, but second of all I love the person so much. I was like so gagged when I got it and we made it happen and the thing was as well that the idea… when I got the vocal back, it sounded exactly like I thought it would and I was so happy.”

When pressed, the “My My My!” hitmaker revealed that he was talking about Ariana Grande. “So her and I, not to be that guy, but we’re actually like kind of friends we met probably for the first time like two years ago or something and we just kept in touch,” he continued. “We were hanging out and I was playing her music and everything and we were just in the studio and I was like, ‘Would you ever sing on this one song?’ But I’m like so annoying about it. I’m like, ‘Would you ever, by chance, if you want, you don’t have to…?’ And she was like, ‘Please. This is going to be really fun.’ So then she just did it and it sounds like exactly like I dreamed it would.”

The Evolution Of Imagine Dragons Continues With “Next To Me”

0

Imagine Dragon slow things down with new single, “Next To Me.” Produced by Alex Da Kid, the love song (their first) is expected to appear on a reissue of the band’s platinum-selling Evolve album. “I always let you down, you’re shattered on the ground,” Dan Reynolds sings over strummed guitars and a sea of backing vocalists on the chorus. “But still I find you there next to me.” The rocker admits that this is an unexpected change of pace in an interview with Zane Lowe.

“Yeah I don’t typically write love songs,” he says. “I started writing when I was about 13 years old and it was a source of an escape from school from depression from feeling lost and it was never a romance. So for me this is some of the first times that I’ve really explored diving into my mind and musicality and sonicality of romance.” As for the song’s sleepy tempo? “I think we’re always trying to push the boundaries of what pop and rock can be and it’s very urban,” Dan explains. “It’s almost like our urban pop rock song in a strange waltz timing then it drops into four four on the bridge.”

“I feel it’s something everybody can relate to, which is feeling like you are going to fail sometimes in a relationship and the true value of a relationship is what happens then. Does the person give you another chance? Do they see past your flaws? Are they with you at your worst?” Listen to “Next To Me,” which is destined to follow “Believer” and “Thunder” into the upper reaches of the top of the Billboard Hot 100 below.

He Is Coming: Zayn Malik Teases New Music

0

Zayn Malik is gearing up for a pop takeover in 2018, and new music may be on the way far sooner than expected. The 25-year-old has taken to posting poems and potential song lyrics on social media recently, and today (February 20) he shared several recordings of a song he is working on. The audio strips back the production to give a taste of the direction the former One Directioner is currently exploring. On them, his voice rises over a sparse piano melody. “She wants somebody to love her. To hold her. She wants somebody to love her in the right way,” he sings in a sweet falsetto. Two final videos include footage of him at the piano and provide another glimpse at his creative process.

This is the first taste of new music since Zayn unleashed the Sia-assisted “Dusk Till Dawn” in September. Buoyed by a dramatic video and a compelling production, the track soared into the upper half of the Billboard Hot 100 and was a top 10 hit in the UK and across most of Europe. However, another buzz track or confirmation of a lead single would be welcome. It is coming up on two years since the release of his debut solo album, Mind of Mine, and his currently untitled sophomore LP is one of the most anticipated of 2018.

Last year, the “Pillowtalk” crooner opened up about the process behind recording his new album in a series of interviews. In the pages of VMAN he explained that the sonic direction would be a continuation of his debut LP, but that his writing skills have markedly improved over the last two years. He also revealed that he had reunited with Malay who works extensively with Frank Ocean. A chat with Fader alluded to a release date in the final months of 2017, and Zayn also teased plans to tour with the new release. Finally, in Billboard he explained the delay and promised to be nearing completion. “I think I’m like 90 percent of the way there,” he said around the release of “Dusk Till Dawn.” It is possible that the snippets we are hearing is the first taste of a new single, but we will have to wait and see. Katy Perry Is About To Hit The Studio With Producer Steve Mac

0

It looks like Katy Perry has already started planning her 5th album. In an interview with Music Week, producer Steve Mac revealed that they are about to get in the studio. “I’ve got a Years & Years track, Bastille… Nick Jonas, and hopefully I’m just about to start working with Katy Perry as well,” the man behind mega-hits like Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” and Liam Payne’s “Strip That Down” said of his upcoming projects. “The opportunities at the moment are incredible. I never thought I’d be here in my career 27 years on.”

While that might seem a little fast given that the Witness World Tourruns until August, the timing is in line with comments Capitol CEO Steve Barnett made in a Q&A with Variety. “Engagement is so important and I don’t believe you can have big cycles between projects,” he singled out as the main reason Witness underperformed. “I think that’s changed.” Hopefully, we’ll get something new by the end of the year. And if Steve Mac is involved, it’s destined to be radio-friendly and catchy as hell. Let the comeback begin!

James Bay’s “Wild Love” Video Stars “Stranger Things” Actress Natalia Dyer

0

The most exciting musical reinvention of 2018 is James Bay 2.0. The Brit, who broke big with bluesy rock anthems like “Let It Go” and “Hold Back The River,” switches his acoustic guitar for sexy synths on “Wild Love” — an ’80s-inspired soul song with shades of early Prince. “I know some of this new sound was not apparent on my first album… but I think my new music helps to paint a fuller picture of who I am,” the 27-year-old explained. “As soon as I recognized I was being pinned down as ‘the intimate acoustic guitar guy’ I realized I knew I had to push myself musically.”

It turns out James not only overhauled his sound, but also his general aesthetic. The video for “Wild Love” drops today and it’s a sleek and sexy adventure that takes place in a club — a venue you wouldn’t associate with anything from Chaos And The Calm. As for the plot? The crooner makes eyes with Stranger Things actress Natalia Dyer while butterflies hover over head. “It was such a pleasure to work with Natalia on the ‘Wild Love’ set,” he enthuses. “She’s a lovely person, a huge talent and it was great hanging with her while making this video.” Watch up top.
