“New Rules” To “Humble,” The 30 Best Music Videos Of 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, we are rounding up the good, the bad and the ugly in all things pop music. Although the year was generally a dumpster, there were excellent moments in pop culture to lift our spirits. For example, many of music’s established hitmakers (as well as a selection of up-and-comers) delivered memorable visuals. We have compiled a list of 30 of the best below. Remind us of any we might have missed in the comments below.

30. “Such A Boy” – Astrid S

Norwegian pop star Astrid S delivers a hazy, neon-drenched romance that needs to be on your must-see list.

29. “Like It Ain’t Nuttin’” – Fergie

Fergie’s larger-than-life swagger in this video made the rest of her visual album look bland.

28. “Love Galore” – SZA

Intimate, lush and shocking, SZA proved herself as one to watch by bouncing from sensual seduction to revenge in her “Love Galore” video.

27. “I’m Better” – Missy Elliott

Serving choreography, looks and drama, Missy Elliott proves that any year can be improved upon so long as she releases new material.

26. “Beautiful Trauma” – Pink

Rebellious and pastel-hued, Pink and Channing Tatum defy expectations and showcase their surprising chemistry in an unexpected collaboration.

25. Paper Love” – Allie X

It is hard to imagine a more unnerving and thought-provoking visual than Allie Xportraying an defiled plaything in “Paper Love.”

24. “Thief” – Ansel Elgort

The Baby Driver actor is also a budding pop star and “Thief” encapsulates his unique musical and visual approach.

23. “Look What You Made Me Do” – Taylor Swift

If extra had a name in 2017 it was Taylor Swift as evidenced by the ridiculous but unforgettable extravaganza that accompanied her lead Reputation single.

22. “Paris” – The Chainsmokers

The EDM duo continued a winning streak and made a Parisian flat fly in their whimsical “Paris” treatment.

21. “I Don’t Want It At All” – Kim Petras

After a trying year there is nothing pop fans deserved more than a glorious Paris Hilton feature in a music video. Thankfully, Kim Petras is already proving to be a generous queen.

20. “New York” – St. Vincent

St. Vincent dipped her toes in the pop pool and celebrated the event with an arty and absolutely compelling video to accompany “New York.”

19. “Felices los 4” – Maluma

Thirst traps abound as Maluma hits the showers in his delectable “Felices Los 4” video.

18. “Sign of the Times” – Harry Styles

The former One Direction star had one of the most-anticipated solo debuts, and he more than lived up to expectations with this video.

18. “Sura Cara” – Major Lazer feat. Anitta & Pabllo Vittar

An undeniable bop deserves an equally majestic video; and AnittaPabllo Vittar and Major Lazer delivered something hotter than any desert for their surprise collaboration.

16. “9 (After Coachella)” – Cashmere Cat feat. MO & SOPHIE

Cashmere Cat proved music videos do not need to rely on flashy costumes and choreography with his intriguing “9 (After Coachella)” offering, which interviewed family and friends of himself and his collaborators.

15. “Mo Bounce” – Iggy Azalea

The year’s most-underrated pop/rap banger received a suitably gratuitous, twerk-heavy video.

14. “Heaven” – Troye Sivan

Released the day Donald Trump assumed office, Troye’s tender-hearted offering is both intimate and inspiring in its portrayals of historic moments of LGBTQ+ pride and rebellion.

13. “That’s What I Like” – Bruno Mars

Simple, stylish and downright fun, Bruno Mars gets it all very right.

12. “Mayores” – Becky G feat. Bad Bunny

With one of the year’s most-watched releases, Becky G delivers a major pop star moment. The sizzling visual offers the “Shower” hitmaker a chance to shed her teeny-bopper image, and she has never seemed more in command.

11. “Tell Me You Love Me” – Demi Lovato

Demi delivered romance, drama and a cinematic twist in the heartbreaking visual for the title track of her excellent LP.

10. “Swish Swish” Lyric Video – Katy Perry

Any one of the visuals Katy Perry released in 2017 could have made the list, but she achieved the impossible with this — by making a lyric video essential viewing. How? She called on Brazilian legend Gretchen for a shady and instantly GIF-able experience. Literally. Everything.

9. “Disco Tits” – Tove Lo

Tove Lo’s “Disco Tits” video is an appropriately unhinged treat that finds her picking up a Muppet and driving off into the sunset with her new lover. Add in inexplicable make-out scenes, and the video is one of the year’s biggest and most incredible surprises.

8. “Love” – Lana Del Rey

Pop’s sad girl pulled off the unexpected with her ethereal and besotted “Love.” The swelling, youthful anthem was an aural delight, and the video was equally brilliant. Lana Del Rey performs on the moon, looking angelic vision with daisies in her hair. Optimistic but somehow wistful, the release provided the hitmaker with one of the loveliest moments of the year.

7. “DNA” – BTS

K-Pop royalty BTS pulled off global domination in 2017. Everything they touched turned to gold including breakthrough single “DNA,” which boasted a (next level) choreography-filled video.

6. “Stargazing” – Kygo feat. Justin Lesso

This surprisingly heartbreaking video documents a boy’s struggle to understand the loss of his father. This is a beautiful, but morose experience that leaves you guessing until the last moment.

5. “Bad Liar” – Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez‘s “Bad Liar” video is as surprising as the song. The clip finds her playing multiple roles including a lovestruck student and a glamorous PE teacher. Endearingly wacky, this is one of the most watchable visuals of the year. And she didn’t even need to eat soap.

4. “Praying” – Kesha

Showcasing bravery and acceptance instead of anger, Kesha’s “Praying” is an unforgettable moment of healing. The accompanying video is equally evocative as the pop star finds solace from her demons. Incorporating spiritual themes, it opens with a spoken-word address and ends with a hopefully prophetic moment as the at-peace singer walks off into the sunrise.

3. “HUMBLE” – Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar is a visual genius capable of embedding deeper meaning into everything he touches. Dressing as a pope, recreating a classic work of art and appearing with his head ablaze, his “HUMBLE” video is appropriately incendiary and moving.

2. “Boys”– Charli XCX

Have you ever wondered what Joe Jonas looks like while eating pancakes? What about how dreamy Diplo is while juggling puppies? Well, thanks to Charli XCX’s“Boys” music video you no longer have to wonder. You can watch these dreamboats and more do precious things in the tables-turning visual.

1. “New Rules” – Dua Lipa

Viral success is flighty and impossible to predict. But when you strike gold, the result is something magical. In 2017, no one knows that better than Dua Lipa. The breakout star struck gold with her “New Rules” video. In it, she leads a group of friends through the steps necessary to avoid an ex and executes one of the coolest moments of girl power in ages.

Liam Payne & Rita Ora Have A Duet On The ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ Soundtrack

UPDATE: Rita Ora confirmed that the duet exists and shared a title. See the tweet below!

It looks like Rita Ora and Liam Payne have recorded a duet for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. The somewhat-unlikely couple posted a picture together on Instagram and they look perfectly suited to the sexy franchise. The “Anywhere” diva rocks a pink cocktail dress, while her potential collaborator looks suave in a suit. I’m not sure if the Brits will generate as much attention as Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik’s Fifty Shades Darker anthem, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” but it can’t hurt either of them.

While Rita is riding high on the back of three UK top 10 hits, she still hasn’t made a dent on the Billboard Hot 100. Liam got off to a good start with “Strip That Down,”which cracked the top 10 and sold double platinum. However, he hasn’t had much luck with “Bedroom Floor.” The 24-year-old’s second solo single has stalled at number 98 despite being a vast improvement on his smash hit debut. Check out their enticing promo pic below.

Cher Makes A Glamorous Cameo In The ‘Mamma Mia 2’ Trailer

The trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the long-overdue sequel to the 2008 hit movie music populated by ABBA songs, arrived today (December 21). It gives an exhaustive recap of the original film as well as updating us on the situation of the pregnant protagonist played by Amanda Seyfried. There are also glimpses of Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski camping it up, but Cher steals the show. She makes a last-minute cameo, stepping from a helicopter in a platinum blond wig no less, as the family’s absurdly-glamorous matriarch.

They will get my money for that scene alone. Apart from saving the Mamma Mia!franchise, Cher has been unusually busy considering that she’s technically off-cycle. Not only is the 71-year-old (how?) keeping fans abreast of the latest political developments via her legendary Twitter, she has also contributed a song called “Prayers For This World” to a documentary called Cries For Syria as well as recording a demented bop called “Ooga Boo” for the Home: Adventures with Tip And Oh soundtrack.

Hopefully the pop icon drops new, non-ABBA music in 2018. Cher is due for a new album. Four years have passed since the arrival of Closer To The Truth and, believe it or not, there are only so many times you can listen to “Woman’s World.” Watch her in the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again trailer below.

Camila Cabello Reveals The Tracklist Of Her Debut Album

Camila Cabello is hoping to take things to the next level in the new year. The “Crying In The Club” siren is gearing up to unleash her self-titled debut album as a solo act next month, and we have finally gotten a look at the project’s tracklist. Released last night (December 21), it includes a handful of songs we are familiar with as well as some surprise gems we will have to wait to hear on January 12.

So far we have heard three tracks to make the cut for the LP. The lead single “Havana”is an urban-influenced, moody banger that has dominated the charts and solidified Camila’s star power. “Never Be The Same,” the second single, is equally fierce, as is buzz track “Real Friends.” The project has been billed as an intimate look into the pop princess’ life, and the remaining titles appear to confirm that she will be getting very personal.

They include the likes of “She Loves Control,” “Consequences” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” If they are anything to go by, it seems we will be learning a lot more about the 20-year-old as we listen to the album. The more we learn about her first full solo outing, the more exciting the project becomes. January 12 cannot arrive soon enough! After a breakout year in 2017, here is to hoping that Camila is able to keep the forward momentum rolling in 2018. Check out the official tracklist below!

Cardi B Announces New Single “Bartier Cardi” Featuring 21 Savage

No one had a better 2017 than Cardi B. She made the transition from reality star to chart heavyweight look easy, taking her debut single, “Bodak Yellow,” all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Only the 25-year-old didn’t stop there. Belcalis (her real name) followed it up with two more top 10 hits — first as a featured artist on G-Eazy’s “No Limit” and then as part of Migos’ star-studded collaboration “MotorSport.” She’s now hoping to close out the year with another one.

The rapper announced that she was releasing a new single called “Bartier Cardi” on Friday (December 22). Cardi also revealed the luxurious cover on Instagram — the breakout star reclines on a leather sofa in a lilac two-piece with champagne, furs and jewelry in the background — as well as a snippet (below). It’s brief, but it sounds like she has another banger on her hands. Can Cardi B make it four top 10 hits in row?

Katy Perry’s “Hey Hey Hey” Video Is An Outrageous Blockbuster

After hyping the clip with a series of stills, Katy Perry’s“Hey Hey Hey” video arrives today (December 20) and it’s as extravagant and outrageous as the teasers suggest. Directed by Isaac Rentz and filmed in Beverly Hills, the blockbuster finds the pop star giving her best Marie Antoinette impression. Only with a twist. Instead of being a cake-obsessed enemy of the common man, our heroine spends her days dreaming of escape. She’s sick of the clothes, the duties and, most of all, her chosen suitor.

As such, Katy escapes into a dream world where her alter-ego is a sword-wielding bad ass with a bowl cut. It’s fun, silly and still strangely empowering like most of the 33-year-old’s best videos. In case you’re wondering why she’s releasing the clip now, it’s simply a festive offering to fans according to the press release. There doesn’t seem to be a full rollout behind it or official single release. Escape into Katy’s bonkers world up top.

A Look At Rihanna’s Acting History, From ‘Bring It On: All or Nothing’ to ‘Ocean’s 8’

The trailer for the highly anticipated Ocean’s Trilogy sequel/spin-off, Ocean’s 8 was released today (Dec. 19) and features an all-star cast of numerous badass women — including everybody’s favorite Barbadian triple-threat, Rihanna.

The iconic superstar has proved time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned since her early days, through her music, fashion and beauty ventures, but also her various acting roles, which have truly showed her versatility and superb talent.

From early work such as Bring It On: All or Nothing to this past year’s sci-fi adventure Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Rihanna has proved she has what it takes to make it in the acting world. Here’s a look back at Rihanna’s roles in both film and television.

Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006)

The cheerleading comedy finds a transfer student trying to join the cheerleading squad of a rough high school, where she not only faces off against the new school’s head cheerleader, but against her former school in a cheer competition as well. Rihanna makes a cameo appearance in the film, where she announces the cheerleading competition and declares that the winners shall appear in a music video with her. A small role, yes, but as good a starting place for Rihanna as any.

In this sci-fi action film, we find Rihanna far from the comforts of the stage, thrust into a war filled with uncertainty. The 2012 film based off the board game of the same name follows a fleet of ships that battle a series of unfamiliar foes, where Rihanna stars as Cora Raikes, a weapons specialist aboard one of the ships. Director Peter Berg stated in an interview with GQ that he came up with the idea to cast Rihanna after he realized she could act when she performed a skit on Saturday Night Live. Rihanna later went on to state that she accepted the role because she wanted to “do something badass.”

This Is the End

The 2013 end of the world comedy directed by Seth Rogen features a hilarious appearance from Rihanna, who is attending a party at James Franco’s house where she and numerous other celebrities are faced with the doom that will be brought on from the impending apocalypse. Though brief, Rihanna’s cameo showcases her comedic chops and versatility as an actress.

Starring in a movie-within-a-movie, Rihanna plays the villain of “MoonQuake Lake,» the flick that Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis go to see together in the musical adaptation. The fake film also co-stars Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.

This 2015 film from DreamWorks finds Rihanna cast in the lead role as Gratuity “Tip” Tucci, a teenage girl who befriends an alien on the run from his own people. During a round of press interviews for the film, Rihanna and her costars Jim Parsons and Steve Martin were asked about the possibility of life on other planets — to which Rihanna suggests keeping an open mind.

Bates Motel

On the hit A&E series, Rihanna starred as Marion Crane, the troubled secretary who played an iconic role in the 1960 horror classic Psycho, which the series is based off of. Taking over the character from Janet Leigh, Rihanna brought a modern and more relatable version to the screen for viewers to identify with. Viewers who were hoping for a remake of the infamous murder scene were out of luck, however, as Rihanna’s version of Crane survived and her lover, Sam Loomis, meet his untimely demise instead.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Meet Bubble, the shape-shifting burlesque dancer portrayed by Rihanna in this fantasy film about two special operatives who must race to identify the evil that threatens the future of their home and the universe. Director Luc Besson contacted RiRi’s manager to offer her the small but crucial role, to which she accepted, and shot around her jam-packed touring and promotions schedule.

Ocean’s Eight

Set to be released Summer 2018, Ocean’s Eight will find Sandra Bullock’s character, Debbie Ocean, attempting to pull off a heist at New York City’s star-studded Met Gala, following in the footsteps of her infamous family. Rihanna will star as Nine Ball, a computer genius and hacker who aids Debbie in her quest, and will star along other such acting stars as Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling and Sarah Paulson.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” Breaks Into The Top 10

Mariah Carey is the reigning queen of the holiday season, and this year she is proving her status by making history on the Billboard Hot 100. Twenty-three years after the release of her iconic anthem “All I Want For Christmas Is You” the single has reached a new peak on the chart. Yesterday (December 18) Billboard announced it had soared into the top 10 and landed at the ninth spot for the first time in its history.

This marks Mimi’s 28th top 10 release; her last came in 2009 with “Obsessed.” It also appears to be the first time a song has taken 23 years to peak in the top 10. Although it was blocked from charting on the Hot 100 upon its initial release, a change in the rules in 2012 has enabled it to soar up the charts every year off impressive streaming numbers. This week alone streaming accounts for 70 percent of its sales.

Last year “All I Want For Christmas Is You” reached its previous peak at number 11. However, this year it has been helped along by the release of an animated movieinspired by the song. The legendary release remains Mimi’s defining holiday anthem and takes the top spot on nearly every Christmas playlist. It is so beloved that this week it tops the Holiday 100 chart for the 29th week. Since it was created in 2011, no other song has topped the chart for more than two weeks. Revisit the enduring single below!

Eminem & Pink Are In A Co-Dependent Relationship On “Need Me”

Eminem recruited a slew of famous faces to appear on his ninth studio album, Revival. He managed a surprise feature with Beyonce on the project’s lead single, “Walk On Water” and delivered an unexpected collaboration with Ed Sheeran on the riveting album track “River.” But that is not all. Out today (December 15), the LP also includes duets with PinkAlicia Keys and Kehlani.

The “Lose Yourself” rapper teams up with Pink on “Need Me,” a swelling ode to a toxic relationship that is one of the strongest offerings from the album. “You’re drunk. The coffee is burned. I hate to find you like this; I always find you like this,” the Beautiful Trauma siren laments over a delicate production. As frustrated as she is, she finds herself unable to move on.

“Some nights I want to run for the hills. It’s never easy with you. I cannot reason with you, but your smile is as rare as it comes,” she sings, realizing that they both need each other to survive. For his part, Eminem is equally caught up in their frenzied romance. “But God must have aligned the stars for us. ‘Cause somebody paired us up, and they say he ain’t capable of making a mistake,” he raps.

This marks the duo’s third collaboration, and it is easily their most evocative. They teamed up on the hard-edged “Won’t Back Down” in 2010 and reunited on Pink’s equally barbed “Revenge” earlier this year. Here they capitalize on their easy chemistry, and the result is something truly heartrending. Hopefully the track will get pushed as an official single at some point. Until then give it a spin below!
